Scream: Opening Scene Analysis

   I like the opening scene to the film scream as straight away we can tell that it is a horror. We get to meet the antagonist of the film although we dont get to see him this builds suspense and intrigue.
One of the ways i can tell its a horror is because in this clip we see many conventions of a typical horror film. For example the helpless teen girl left home alone. When she tells the antagonist that her 'boyfriend will be home soon and he will beat you up' this reinforces her helplessness as she is calling on another male to protect her showing that the male has dominance in this film.
   
    The loaction of this film is in a large dark house at night time. The house being dark and large adds a lot of mystery becuase you cant see very well and the house is so big the antagonist could be anywhere. The connotations of dark is being in fear and scary so we can relate that to the way the character is feeling when she is speaking to the antagonist on the phone saying that he is watching her also you normally find large houses in quite remote areas meaning that she may be far from help making the audiance feel even more worried for her. The contrast between the lighting in and out of the house represance the differeance in characters.  If you pay attention at the start the house is really bright but as the scene becomes scarier the light becomes dark untill its almost pitch black. It's really dark out side where the antagonis as he is evil and that what the audiance would relate to scary and evil where and protaganist is in more of a  lights we represent this with good and saftey as in the dark you dont know and you get the fear of the unknown.

   The dialogue of this clip starts of being quite friendly and slightly flirtatious but as she gets find out more about the man she was speaking on the phone as the the scence becomes more tense and she finds out the real motive of the call. The chosen music in the background adds to the effect of the scene adding suspence and  tenstion making the audiance become more worried for the teen girl.
